SOUTHWATER INFANT SCHOOL
PRESS RELEASE
MUSEUM 28 MARCH 2008
Southwater Infant School has been developing a school Museum as part of it’s “Cracking Open Culture” initiative and parents from Years 1 and 2 were invited to visit their History exhibition this week. The theme of the exhibition in Year 1 was on Toys and in Year 2, Southwater schools from 1800 through to the present time. The Year 2 exhibition was interactive and parents were invited to ask questions, find information by reading the old school logs and to write their favourite memory of their own school lives.
Mrs Jackie Evans, the school’s History Subject Leader who organised the exhibitions, was delighted at the response of parents and their assistance in helping the children dress as Victorian Curators. Many parents and friends of the school visited the two day exhibition and wrote some wonderful comments :- “What a wonderful exhibition, the children were so knowledgeable and they spoke clearly and with enthusiasm, we wanted to stay all day”.
The school has been supported with help and guidance from Mrs Laura Kidner, the Exhibition Curator from Worthing Museum. The Curator children had previously had the opportunity of visiting Worthing Museum, when Mrs Kidner showed them around and explained the role of a Curator. Mrs Kidner also arranged for some artefacts to be loaned to the school. Parents have also been kind enough to either loan or donate items for the museum displays.
On Friday the school was very pleased to welcome Mr Bob Piper, Southwater’s local historian, to officially open the school Museum. Mr Piper has supported our museum by speaking to the children about his school life. He has also brought in various artefacts to show and donated photographs which are on display.
